Brown Paper Carrier Bags Are the Environmentally Friendly Option

Branded carrier bags are produced in all sorts of designs and materials in factories across the world. Recently public awareness of the environmental impact of plastic carrier bags has led to sharply increased demand for environmentally friendly carrier bags.

Necessarily, this limits your design options. As experienced retail packaging designers, we know what works and doesn't so here's our quick guide to the main things to consider when producing biodegradable and eco friendly carrier bags.

1)    Paper bags great, fabric bags OK, plastic carrier bags bad

Actually, all of these materials have their proponents but paper carrier bags are generally seen as being the most environmentally friendly. Paper is easy for recyclers to identify and therefore to recycle or incinerate. Assuming the other points in this article are implemented paper decomposes easily without causing much harm to the environment.

2) Where is the material from?

Paper should always come from a sustainable source, which usually means from a managed forest in which every tree used is replaced. Sustainable paper from a managed forest is usually accredited with an FSC or PEFC mark but there are many other certifications too.

3) Recycled does not equal environmentally friendly

The trick here is to work out what has been recycled. If it's recycled paper, but what's been recycled is off-cuts from the paper mills, and those off-cuts are not from managed forests, that's not particularly environmentally friendly, particularly if you consider that it's been through two manufacturing cycles using water, chemicals and energy. So, always check the original source of the paper and ask for certifications.

4) Avoid laminations

Lamination, a thin layer of film (gloss or matt) on the paper, makes the paper stronger but harder to recycle or degrade. Bio-degradable lamination is available, but it will probably still be rejected at the recycling mill since it looks the same as normal lamination.

A sealer using water based inks produces a similar effect.

5) Choose eco friendly handles

Here we have a trade-off between luxury, comfort and the environment. Within the eco options, if you want luxury, a cotton based rope cord is better than a PP (polypropylene) handle, either way the handle would have to be removed by the user before the bag is recycled. Paper tapered handles or paper twisted handles are biodegradable and more comfortable than die cut handles which are environmentally friendly but can be uncomfortable to hold.

6) Eco friendly bag printing

Check that the factory producing your customized carrier bags is using water based inks and glues. A biodegradable bag design would have no foiling, metallic inks or spot U.V.

7) Where is the factory?

Avoid air freighting if you can. Avoid excessive packing for transport to you.

Save the environment and use brown paper carrier bags. Carrier bags in general have now become a very essential part of the retail industry. They provide an effective means for your customers to carry various products home. However in most countries gift carrier bags have become a major source of non-pollution. These items contribute to as much as 15 to 20 percent of the total trash. Safe disposal of these products has become a challenge to most governments. Paper bags can help you with this predicament.

Most of the carrier bags you will find today are made of cellophane and polythene. These materials are not bio-degradable and they need a special mode of disposal. In some third world countries the reckless use of these products is causing severe damage to the environment. Many governments have therefore imposed a ban on all carrier bags. However you need not lose hope.

Family Mediation - Questions and Answers

What is Family Mediation?

Family mediation is an Alternative Dispute Resolution technique that is used to resolve issues that are experienced between family members. The mediation process allows both parties to have confidential dialogue and to reach an agreement between the disputants with the assistance of a mediator, or neutral person. The mediator, being impartial, cannot advise you on what you should or should not accept with regards to possible solutions, but will work as a catalyst clarifying legal issues keeping the lines of communication open.

What Type of Issues may be covered by Mediation?

Milton Keynes Family mediation can involve disputes post separation or divorce such as child custody or ownership disputes as well as such issues as elder mediation which relates to dealing with elderly family members. Other family disputes that can benefit from mediation include land disputes and finances. Additional issues include pet allocation, addressing the welfare of ill family members as well as visitation rights if one parent finds themselves in unacceptable living arrangements post divorce.

How Long Do Mediation Usually Take?

As a general rule of thumb, mediations will take no longer than three hours; however, this is up to the discretion of the mediator and how they feel the proceedings are moving along. If it appears that a resolution is just around the corner, they will continue until it is achieved. If however, there seems to be many more issues to deal with, and then additional sessions may be scheduled. Much mediation reaches a conclusion between three and six hours. At this point if there is no agreement, the mediator may conclude that other techniques may need to be implemented or that the case requires more formal attention.

How Confidential is the Process?

While most of what is said during the mediation process is held in the strictest of confidence, it is important to note that financial information can be made public if the case were to go before a court. Information divulged during the mediation process cannot be used in court unless both the parties involved have agreed to it. During the mediation process itself, caucus or private sessions between one party and the mediator, may be called by either party. The information divulged during this caucus is entirely confidential and may not be used in the mediation unless permission is granted.

If an Agreement is Reached, How is it enforced?

In the event that an agreement is reached by both the parties which is mutually satisfactory, a summary will be written up which must then be presented to a solicitor. The solicitor will then compile an agreement based on the summary which is legally binding and will request that both parties sign the agreement. The initial summary written up by the mediator is not a legally binding contract, but a contract of good faith. It is only made legal once a legal representative turns it into a binding contract.

Are Mediators Legal Representatives?

Although it is becoming commonplace for Salisbury family mediators to have a legal background and for many of them to have a very good understanding of the legal process, some people feel that the nature of mediation is very different to the confrontational nature of court proceedings and prefer to work with Northampton family mediators who are not qualified lawyers, but rather paralegals who have trained in mediation and have an excellent understanding of the legal system.

Processing food could involve a number of processes, for instance some food stuff will need to be sieved to be the correct size, and ingredients may need to be added, counted and then packed. Each process will be done on different machinery which means the food stuff needs to be conveyed to each process.
